A special gala performance celebrating Robert Cohan’s legacy and his prolific eight year collaboration with Yorke Dance Project, Guest artists from The Royal Ballet and Martha Graham Dance Company join Yorke DanceProject to perform some of his signature and more recent works. The event includes live performances of Canciones Del Alma and Communion an excerpt of Nympheas performed by special guest artists from The Royal Ballet, soloists Romany Pajdak and Matthew Ball; and a solo from Afternoon Conversations with Dancers, performed by Pajdak. On film are screenings featuring two guest performers from the Martha Graham Dance Company-a film of Laurel Dalley Smith in the studio with Cohan creating Wind, a commission from the Martha Graham Dance Company, and a screening of a solo for Lloyd Knight with artwork by Rashid Johnson sponsored by Hauser and Wirth.
The evening opens with Yolande Yorke-Edgell’s performance of Martha Graham’s Lamentation followed by a short work she has choreographed for her company as a tribute to Cohan. The work features a poem written and performed by Cohan’s nephew, writer Roy Vestrich, and is set to music composed by Bob Downes, performed live by flautist Rebecca Speller.
